Weather – Coudy, 46 degrees
Jordan Shipley had 6 catches for 115 yards and one late touchdown catch to ice the win over East Carolina in the first round NCAA playoff game in Austin.

East Carolina fumbled a punt attempt in their own end zone on their very first possession of the game to hand Texas a 7-0 lead before Colt McCoy and the Texas offense even had to take a snap. Patrick Pinkney led the Pirates down the field on their next possession, only to have a 41 yard field goal attempt blocked by the Texas special teams. Both teams traded punts a couple of times before Texas had their first nice offensive drive in the second quarter, resulting in a 1 yard QB sneak TD from Colt McCoy to put the Longhorns up 14-0. East Carolina did not go away, however, as they took the next possession and drove 85 yards for a touchdown, ending in a Brandon Jackson 5 yard TD run on an option pitch from Pinkney.
Texas punted on their next posession and East Carolina was in field goal range right before half until a sack pushed the kick back to make it a 51 yard attempt, which was wide right to end the half. Texas started the 3rd quarter with a long methodical drive that resulted in a 21 yard TD pass from McCoy to Malcolm Williams, putting Texas on top 21-7. There were several 3 and out possessions from both teams beforePinkney hit Dwayne Harris on a 21 yard TD pass to cut the lead to 21-14 with 3:03 remaining in the game. Texas took the ensuing kickoff and pounded away yardage on the ground, ending with the 9 yard TD pass from McCoy to Shipley with 1:20 remaining and accounting for the final score of 28-14.
Texas advances to the second round of the playoffs, where they will host the Iowa Hawkeyes next Friday. East Carolina will end their season in a bowl game to be determined on Sunday.
